Can cats eat Dog food (cats eating)?
Caution. An occasional stolen mouthful of dog food won't harm a cat, but dog food lacks the taurine, arginine, and fat levels cats need. Long-term feeding causes serious nutritional deficiencies including blindness and heart failure.
If your cat has eaten dog food (cats eating)
- One-off ingestion: no action needed, return cat to its normal food.
- If a cat has been eating dog food for more than a week: contact your vet for blood tests.
What's the full picture?
Taurine is the critical missing nutrient. Cats can't synthesise it and need it in their diet; dogs make their own. A cat fed dog food long-term develops taurine deficiency, which causes dilated cardiomyopathy (heart failure) and retinal degeneration (blindness).
A one-off bowl of dog food isn't an emergency โ the cat just won't be getting optimal nutrition for that meal. Persistent feeding over weeks to months is where real damage develops.
If a dog and cat share a household, feed separately. Some multi-pet households use raised cat feeding stations the dog can't reach.

About this guidance
Every entry on this site is compiled from published UK veterinary toxicology sources โ International Cat Care, Veterinary Poisons Information Service (VPIS) references, RCVS-registered practice materials, and peer-reviewed feline medicine literature. Where the evidence is mixed, we err on the cautious side because cats are unusually sensitive to many common substances that are harmless to humans and even to dogs.
This is general information written for UK cat owners. It is not personalised veterinary advice for your specific cat, their age, weight, medical history, or the exact exposure you're dealing with. If your cat has eaten something or is unwell, call your vet first. The Animal PoisonLine on 01202 509000 is available 24/7 for a small fee and can tell you whether an emergency visit is needed.
Entries are reviewed and updated as new research emerges. Spotted an error? Let us know โ corrections are investigated and applied within 24 hours. For more context on how we work, see about and our full disclaimer.
