Can cats eat Turkey bones?

No โ€” dangerous

No. Cooked turkey bones splinter easily and can cause serious damage to the mouth, throat, or gut. A major Christmas emergency.

If your cat has just eaten turkey bones

  1. If your cat is choking or pawing at its mouth, call your vet immediately.
  2. For a cat that has swallowed bone pieces, also call your vet โ€” they may advise x-ray or monitoring depending on size.
  3. Do not try to remove stuck bone fragments yourself.

What's the full picture?

Cooked bones of all types are dangerous, but turkey bones are a particular Christmas issue โ€” they're large, plentiful, and often tossed in the bin with tempting scraps still attached.

Cats chewing or swallowing pieces of turkey bone can get perforations, obstructions, or bone fragments lodged in the throat.

Use a lidded bin or take bones straight to an outside bin as soon as the carcass is stripped.

Symptoms to watch for

Immediately
Choking, gagging, drooling, pawing at mouth.
Hours to days
Vomiting, off food, abdominal pain if bone is in stomach or gut.

About this guidance

Every entry on this site is compiled from published UK veterinary toxicology sources โ€” International Cat Care, Veterinary Poisons Information Service (VPIS) references, RCVS-registered practice materials, and peer-reviewed feline medicine literature. Where the evidence is mixed, we err on the cautious side because cats are unusually sensitive to many common substances that are harmless to humans and even to dogs.

This is general information written for UK cat owners. It is not personalised veterinary advice for your specific cat, their age, weight, medical history, or the exact exposure you're dealing with. If your cat has eaten something or is unwell, call your vet first. The Animal PoisonLine on 01202 509000 is available 24/7 for a small fee and can tell you whether an emergency visit is needed.

Entries are reviewed and updated as new research emerges. Spotted an error? Let us know โ€” corrections are investigated and applied within 24 hours. For more context on how we work, see about and our full disclaimer.
