Is Rubber bands / elastic bands dangerous for cats?
No. Rubber bands are bitey, chewy, and tempting. Swallowed, they can cause obstruction or linear foreign body damage.
If your cat has just eaten rubber bands / elastic bands
- Don't try to pull a swallowed rubber band back out.
- Don't induce vomiting.
- Go to your vet immediately โ rubber bands can cause linear foreign body, which can cut through the intestine.
- If the band is visible in the mouth, remove it gently.
- Collect remaining rubber bands in the house and put them out of reach.
What's the full picture?
Rubber bands are a linear foreign body hazard โ cats play with them as toys and sometimes swallow them.
Once swallowed, a rubber band can wrap around the base of the tongue or become lodged in the stomach, where peristalsis can pull it through and cut the intestine.
Gather loose rubber bands from countertops, kitchen drawers, and especially the kitchen floor. Cats are much more likely to play with a rubber band than to leave it alone.

About this guidance
Every entry on this site is compiled from published UK veterinary toxicology sources โ International Cat Care, Veterinary Poisons Information Service (VPIS) references, RCVS-registered practice materials, and peer-reviewed feline medicine literature. Where the evidence is mixed, we err on the cautious side because cats are unusually sensitive to many common substances that are harmless to humans and even to dogs.
This is general information written for UK cat owners. It is not personalised veterinary advice for your specific cat, their age, weight, medical history, or the exact exposure you're dealing with. If your cat has eaten something or is unwell, call your vet first. The Animal PoisonLine on 01202 509000 is available 24/7 for a small fee and can tell you whether an emergency visit is needed.
