Is White spirit / turpentine dangerous for cats?
No. White spirit and turpentine are hydrocarbon solvents used for paint thinning and cleaning brushes. Cats that walk through spills, lick contaminated fur, or inhale fumes can develop severe chemical pneumonia and neurological signs.
If your cat has just eaten white spirit / turpentine
- Do NOT induce vomiting โ aspiration risk.
- Move the cat to fresh air if fumes were inhaled.
- Wash contaminated fur with warm water and pet-safe shampoo.
- Go to emergency vet immediately.
- Take product packaging with you.
What's the full picture?
Hydrocarbons are particularly dangerous to cats because aspiration (breathing the fumes or inhaling during vomiting) causes chemical pneumonia โ a serious, often fatal lung injury.
The common UK exposure is a cat investigating a garage or utility room during a DIY project. A paintbrush-cleaning tray left on the floor is a classic scenario.
Never induce vomiting for hydrocarbon exposure โ the risk of aspiration is higher than the benefit of clearance.

About this guidance
Every entry on this site is compiled from published UK veterinary toxicology sources โ International Cat Care, Veterinary Poisons Information Service (VPIS) references, RCVS-registered practice materials, and peer-reviewed feline medicine literature. Where the evidence is mixed, we err on the cautious side because cats are unusually sensitive to many common substances that are harmless to humans and even to dogs.
This is general information written for UK cat owners. It is not personalised veterinary advice for your specific cat, their age, weight, medical history, or the exact exposure you're dealing with. If your cat has eaten something or is unwell, call your vet first. The Animal PoisonLine on 01202 509000 is available 24/7 for a small fee and can tell you whether an emergency visit is needed.
