Can cats eat Coconut oil?

Caution

Caution. Coconut oil isn't acutely toxic, but it's high in fat (saturated) and the 'healthy fat' narrative around it doesn't apply to cats. Home-remedy use for skin or coat issues isn't effective and can trigger pancreatitis.

If your cat has eaten coconut oil

  1. Small amount: monitor.
  2. Larger amount or a cat with history of pancreatitis: call your vet.

What's the full picture?

Coconut oil's popularity in human wellness has led to owners offering it to cats for hairballs, dry skin, or 'supplementation'. Cats don't benefit from medium-chain triglycerides the way the marketing suggests.

A lick isn't an emergency. A larger ingestion can cause diarrhoea and โ€” in cats prone to pancreatitis โ€” a serious flare.

Topical coconut oil is a separate question; if applied to a cat, they'll groom it off, which is effectively a dietary exposure. Use pet-specific skin products instead.

Symptoms to watch for

6โ€“24 hours
Diarrhoea (the most common sign).
24โ€“72 hours
Pancreatitis with larger ingestions.

About this guidance

Every entry on this site is compiled from published UK veterinary toxicology sources โ€” International Cat Care, Veterinary Poisons Information Service (VPIS) references, RCVS-registered practice materials, and peer-reviewed feline medicine literature. Where the evidence is mixed, we err on the cautious side because cats are unusually sensitive to many common substances that are harmless to humans and even to dogs.

This is general information written for UK cat owners. It is not personalised veterinary advice for your specific cat, their age, weight, medical history, or the exact exposure you're dealing with. If your cat has eaten something or is unwell, call your vet first. The Animal PoisonLine on 01202 509000 is available 24/7 for a small fee and can tell you whether an emergency visit is needed.

Entries are reviewed and updated as new research emerges. Spotted an error? Let us know โ€” corrections are investigated and applied within 24 hours. For more context on how we work, see about and our full disclaimer.
