Can cats eat Olive oil?
Caution. A few drops of plain olive oil aren't toxic, but regular or larger amounts add unnecessary fat to a cat's diet and can trigger pancreatitis. It offers no nutritional benefit and shouldn't be added to food.
If your cat has eaten olive oil
- For a small amount: monitor for vomiting or diarrhoea.
- For larger amounts or garlic-infused oil: call your vet.
What's the full picture?
Olive oil is often recommended online as a 'home remedy' for hairballs or constipation. It's not acutely harmful in tiny amounts but isn't effective โ and adding fat to a sensitive cat's diet can trigger pancreatitis.
A cat that licks up a tablespoon off a kitchen floor isn't in immediate danger, but should be monitored. Anything more than incidental needs vet contact.
Flavoured or infused oils (garlic-infused, chilli-infused) are more concerning โ the flavourings cats can't have are now concentrated in the oil.

About this guidance
Every entry on this site is compiled from published UK veterinary toxicology sources โ International Cat Care, Veterinary Poisons Information Service (VPIS) references, RCVS-registered practice materials, and peer-reviewed feline medicine literature. Where the evidence is mixed, we err on the cautious side because cats are unusually sensitive to many common substances that are harmless to humans and even to dogs.
This is general information written for UK cat owners. It is not personalised veterinary advice for your specific cat, their age, weight, medical history, or the exact exposure you're dealing with. If your cat has eaten something or is unwell, call your vet first. The Animal PoisonLine on 01202 509000 is available 24/7 for a small fee and can tell you whether an emergency visit is needed.
