Is Bleach dangerous for cats?

No โ€” dangerous

No. Domestic bleach is corrosive to the mouth, throat, and stomach. Most cat exposures are from licking recently bleached surfaces or spilled bleach on fur.

If your cat has just eaten bleach

  1. Rinse the mouth with water if ingested โ€” but do not induce vomiting (caustic liquid would damage the oesophagus again).
  2. Wash any bleach off the fur with warm water.
  3. Call your vet.
  4. If you can't reach a vet, call Animal PoisonLine (01202 509000) โ€” paid triage, 24/7.

What's the full picture?

Domestic bleach (sodium hypochlorite) is strongly alkaline and causes chemical burns. Dilute bleach causes irritation; concentrated bleach causes severe burns.

Most cat exposures happen when surfaces are cleaned and not rinsed properly, and the cat then walks on them and grooms its paws. Letting cleaned floors dry fully and rinsing surfaces that cats walk on prevents most exposures.

Symptoms to watch for

0โ€“4 hours
Drooling, pawing at mouth, vomiting, loss of appetite.
4โ€“24 hours
Respiratory signs from aspiration, mouth or throat ulcers visible.

About this guidance

Every entry on this site is compiled from published UK veterinary toxicology sources โ€” International Cat Care, Veterinary Poisons Information Service (VPIS) references, RCVS-registered practice materials, and peer-reviewed feline medicine literature. Where the evidence is mixed, we err on the cautious side because cats are unusually sensitive to many common substances that are harmless to humans and even to dogs.

This is general information written for UK cat owners. It is not personalised veterinary advice for your specific cat, their age, weight, medical history, or the exact exposure you're dealing with. If your cat has eaten something or is unwell, call your vet first. The Animal PoisonLine on 01202 509000 is available 24/7 for a small fee and can tell you whether an emergency visit is needed.

Entries are reviewed and updated as new research emerges. Spotted an error? Let us know โ€” corrections are investigated and applied within 24 hours. For more context on how we work, see about and our full disclaimer.
