Is Washing powder / liquid detergent dangerous for cats?
No. Washing powders and liquid laundry detergents contain concentrated surfactants that cause severe mouth, throat, and GI burns if licked or eaten. Less dramatic than laundry pods but still a serious emergency.
If your cat has just eaten washing powder / liquid detergent
- Don't induce vomiting โ the surfactants foam and can aspirate.
- Wipe any powder from fur and paws with a damp cloth.
- If ingested, go to vet immediately.
- Take product packaging to the vet.
What's the full picture?
Powder detergents (Ariel Automatic, Persil Bio, Bold) produce caustic effects when wet. A cat licking spilled powder off wet paws gets a severe mouth burn.
Liquid detergents (Persil Liquid, Ariel Gel) are closer to laundry-pod content but at lower concentration. Still very irritant.
Non-bio versions aren't meaningfully safer for cats โ 'non-bio' refers to enzyme content (for human skin sensitivity), not overall toxicity.

About this guidance
Every entry on this site is compiled from published UK veterinary toxicology sources โ International Cat Care, Veterinary Poisons Information Service (VPIS) references, RCVS-registered practice materials, and peer-reviewed feline medicine literature. Where the evidence is mixed, we err on the cautious side because cats are unusually sensitive to many common substances that are harmless to humans and even to dogs.
This is general information written for UK cat owners. It is not personalised veterinary advice for your specific cat, their age, weight, medical history, or the exact exposure you're dealing with. If your cat has eaten something or is unwell, call your vet first. The Animal PoisonLine on 01202 509000 is available 24/7 for a small fee and can tell you whether an emergency visit is needed.
